Our much beloved Gryphon Trio teams up with the stellar Norwegian a capella vocal ensemble Nordic Voices for a unique evening of musical exploration, featuring new works by living composers from Canada and abroad. Audiences may recall the sounds of Nordic Voices from the film portions of the March 2023 performance on this stage of Echoes: Memories of the World, but this time we get the full experience of the group.
Do not miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance to hear four superb new creations commissioned by the Gryphon Trio. These works are by some of today’s most emotionally direct and powerfully engaging composers, including Andrew Balfour (Cree), Norbert Palej (Polish/Canadian), Bohdana Frolyak (Ukrainian), and Vancouver-based Jeffrey Ryan whose new commission sets a text by Toronto poet Michael Redhill.

Experience an evening of sonic discovery as Canada’s Gryphon Trio, three-time JUNO Award winners, collaborates with the extraordinary Norwegian vocal sextet Nordic Voices. From the lyricism of Dvořák’s Dumky Trio to a cappella works rooted in global folk traditions, the program also features music by Polish composer Norbert Palej and Ukrainian composer Bohdana Frolyak. A cross-cultural encounter of artistry, sonority, and story.
In celebration of Laurier’s 50th anniversary, the Laurier Guest Artist Series brings renowned guest artists to campus, curated by the internationally acclaimed Penderecki String Quartet (PSQ). The PSQ has thoughtfully selected each ensemble to offer powerful, professional performances that connect Laurier’s musical legacy with the broader musical world.

Celebrating over 30 years of artistry and innovation, Gryphon Trio has firmly cemented its place as one of the world’s foremost piano trios, captivating audiences globally with their vibrant, boundary-pushing performances. Comprising violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon, cellist Roman Borys, and pianist Jamie Parker, Gryphon Trio is celebrated for its dynamic programming, from cherished classical repertoire to avant-garde, multimedia collaborations that redefine chamber music for the 21st century.

Formed in 1996, Nordic Voices comprises six graduates from the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Norwegian Academy of Opera, who, in addition to their singing backgrounds, have a broad range of experience from choral conducting to teacher training and composition. It is perhaps this range of interests that leads them to explore a wider than usual spectrum of musical expression, from plainchant to new works commissioned from leading Norwegian composers; from the most sacred of religious texts to the strongly secular.
