SPECIAL PROGRAMMES
As well as working enthusiastically with presenters to fulfill their
programming needs, the Gryphon Trio is very pleased to be able to
offer the following special programming options:
Music that speaks to you
Host Gary Kulesha and the Gryphon Trio in
dialogue and concert
A Gryphon Trio initiative developed with Music Toronto
Hosted by celebrated Canadian composer Gary Kulesha, the Music
that speaks to you presentations offer audiences a refreshing look
at the lives of well known composers and their work. Kulesha’s
brilliant commentary touches on little known facts and connections
that offer today's audiences a new appreciation for talent, creative
process and historical circumstance. Throughout the evening the
Gryphon Trio supports Kulesha’s commentary with musical excerpts
and finishes the programme with a complete performance of the major
work at the centre of the discussion. The Trio currently offers
the following themes for this program:
Music that speaks to you:
Brahms: echoes of the past, gateways to the future
An exploration of the Brahms' C Major Piano Trio, Op. 87.
Music that speaks to you:
Unravel Ravel
A fascinating exploration of one the 20th century’s chamber
music masterpieces, Ravel’s trio in a minor.
Music that speaks to you:
Reflections of perfection – the Mozart in Chopin
Kulesha reveals the source of Chopin’s inspiration through
an exploration of his remarkable piano trio and presentation of
music by Mozart, Field, Moscheles and Debussy – Chopin’s
predecessors, contemporaries and heirs.
Sublime Conflict
A three concert series featuring the complete Mozart piano trios
along side war-inspired 20th century masterpieces
This three concert mini series features six Mozart piano trios
together with celebrated piano trios by Shostakovich, Clarke and
Bridge. These three haunting 20th century masterpieces were all
inspired by war and make for a fascinating and powerful juxtaposition
when presented alongside the Mozart trios. (Premiered in Brussels,
Belgium in 2005.)
...and the masks evoke...
Composed by Chan Ka-Nin
Visual component developed by Robert Dewey
Running time: 22 minutes
After an inspiring tour of the Pacific Northwest, the Gryphon Trio
sought out renowned composer Chan Ka-Nin to create a work that would
attempt to capture and embody the spirit and majesty of the remote
areas of British Columbia and the Gwaii Haanas also known as the
Queen Charlotte Islands. Described as enigmatic, stunning and mysterious,
the work fuses the aboriginal culture with Chan’s own musical
language, influenced by his upbringing in Hong Kong. Expressing
the voice of a people whose culture has been suppressed for a century,
the work relates to the first ancestors, the spiritual world and
transformation. In concert, huge images of dramatic contemporary
masks created by First Nations artists are projected above the Trio
while they perform the music in virtual darkness. Developed by producer
Robert Dewey, the visual component of this work compliments and
intensifies the music resulting in an experience that is hauntingly
beautiful, immersive and mesmerizing.
Beethoven Cycle
The Gryphon Trio is now offering a Beethoven cycle as a programming
option. Over the course of two performances the Gryphon Trio will
